Where My Heels Went in 2016 (Part 1)

2016 was by far my most travelled year yet! My two little feet did quite a bit of hopping around and I loved it. I’ve broken this up into two parts since it seemed long and I didn’t want you falling asleep. Without further ado, here’s a snapshot of my 2016 in travel!

Since I had just travelled to Vietnam in December returning on New Year’s Eve, I spent the new year jet-lagged and only woke up for ten minutes when I heard fireworks.

January and February are an intense time for me at work so there was no non-work travel for this girl. However, in January I snagged a super cheap £55 ticket to Marrakech, Morocco.

March: I travelled solo to Marrakech, Morocco for three days over Easter weekend. It was colourful, loud, aroused all my senses, and was unlike anywhere else I’ve been.

Me at Ben Youssef Madrasa

In early May, two of my friends/colleagues and I decided to start exploring our stomping grounds (Scotland) by going on a day trip to the highlands. We visited Loch Ness, Glencoe, Ben Nevis, the Harry Potter train station, and more!

Highlands Day Trip From Edinburgh (can’t remember the stop)

At the end of May, I learned a lesson in patience and friendship when a well planned trip to Italy fell through because of my visa issues. My friend, at the last minute rerouted her trip to come see me in Scotland instead of us meeting up in Italy. More on this in a separate post. We explored Edinburgh and the West Highlands this time.

‘K’ and I at Kilchurn Castle

The last two days in May saw me finally with my Schengen visa in hand and headed to the Netherlands for the first time. This was a business trip but I added a day on at the end

Dam Square in Amsterdam

The frugal traveller that I am made a weekend trip out of the work trip to Netherlands by going to Malta for the weekend instead of coming right back.

Visiting the Island of Gozo, Malta

By Mid-June my heels were back on the road, this time exploring Portugal during Euro cup. This time I didn’t go solo. I met up with my travel buddies from Germany and San Francisco (more on my travel buddies later but this crew first travelled together in 2013 to Thailand).  We explored Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve (Lagos!!)

By July my accountant told me to sit still and recuperate financially.

However, it turned out that a friend of mine from the U.S. was going to be in Paris for work and would come early to see me for the weekend. The hotel would be covered by her job! That’s how I ended up spending 48 hours in Paris on little notice! It was my first time in France.

Finally at the Eiffel Tower, making faces

That’s all I got up to from January to July last year. Look out for Part 2 in the next post. What were you up to in 2016?

XoXo,

Dee
