If Heels Could Talk – Chasing The Northern Lights

We had been there for 2.5 hours, nothing, not even a northern ‘speck.’ I sat down, accepting this fact and giving myself an internal pep talk about all the other beautiful things we’d seen during our time in Iceland. Now where were we exactly? I couldn’t tell you, but we were in the middle of nowhere outside Reykjavik Iceland. As it is, you have the leave the buzz and lights of the city to see the aurora borealis.

For the northern lights viewing, we’d gone with a tour company where you ride in a bus with several others into the middle of nowhere. Then, you’re dumped dropped off for a few hours and you hope to God the lights come out to dance.

The only thing in sight was this building where vendors sold hot chocolate, and a bar with drinks. We’d sat at the bar for a while and chatted with three local guys, but they’d had one too many drinks. The conversation ran its course at some point but we were stuck and one of the guys would not let us move on. Side note: we met and talked with a guy that has raised renowned racing horses.

Hit Or Miss!

People say that seeing the northern lights is hit or miss. You might be lucky and you might not. I tried to convince myself that I’d be fine either way, but heck no! Did I come here to count horses? Yes, Iceland is beautiful and the blue lagoon was a major highlight, but MY main reason of coming was to see the Northern Lights. We waited…and waited and waited! I was cold and disappointed to be honest. We gave up and went onto the bus about 30 minutes before we were to leave. I told myself I’d get over it with time, and I really knew I would. I mean, this is a first world problem!

Last Minute Miracle

Out of nowhere, my friend comes yelling, ‘northern lights’! He’s such a joker so I called him a liar but I didn’t want to miss out so I got off the bus anyway…just in case! We looked up, and there it was, doing a little dance…shades of green across the skies, just for us, when we had given up! This dance lasted for about 20 minutes and we couldn’t believe what just happened. It was nothing short of a miracle.

Sometimes we have go the extra mile to get away from the distractions (city) and be set apart to find what it is we are looking for. It might be feel lonely (cold and dark in my case) but it is often worth it. There’s also this thing about patience and contentment, I don’t need to say much about it but I’m working on it! Lastly, have the right people around you. I’d given up and gone onto the bus but my friend stayed out waiting. He waited and took the time to call on us! Thanks. Mpumz!

You can see the northern lights in Alaska, Iceland, Northern Canada, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Greenland!
