Traditional Japanese Souvenirs

There are souvenirs that automatically come to mind when you think of taking a bit of Japan home.

1. Maneki Neko – The beckoning cat

This popular Japanese figurine known as the beckoning cat is known to bring good luck to the owner. A raised right paw beckons money, while the left beckons business patronage. When both paws are raised, then protection is provided. The beckoning cat may come with a variety of accessories. This lucky charm remains on many shopping lists.

Where to purchase Maneki Neko in Tokyo:

  • Don Quijote (anywhere in town),
  • Or at the stores leading up to Senso-ji temple in Asakusa

2. Kokeshi Dolls & Daruma Dolls

Kokeshi are Japanese wooden dolls without arms or legs. They represent Japanese wooden craftsmanship and can be traced back more than 150 years. They look like Japanese men, women, and children in traditional clothing. While they are mostly given out as children’s toys, they signify hope for good harvest, good luck, and good fortune.

On the other hand, Daruma dolls are round, hollow Japanese traditional wishing dolls. They are good luck charms that symbolize perseverance and good fortune. It is the most popular good luck charm in Japan. Daruma is made of papier-mache and is traditionally red.

Edible Souvenirs- Popular Souvenirs From Japan

There are so many edible souvenirs from Japan, and they can generally be bought at department stores, supermarkets, convenience stores,  airport duty-free shops, or major train stations. I love edible souvenirs, especially for minimalist friends as I know I’m NOT adding more stuff to their lives. Plus, it is always wonderful to bring a taste of Japan to my friends and family all over the world. From Nigeria, to London, to the USA, my friends and family have loved all the edible goodies! Here are some ideas of edible souvenirs to get from Japan and where you can get them.

3.  Unique Kit Kat Flavours* (matcha, sake, yuzu, strawberry, and so much more)

4. All sorts of Pocky* varieties. Lately, I’ve been into the mint variety

5. Instant ramen bowls – it’s Japan after all

6. Tokyo Banana* – banana-shaped sponge cake filled with banana custard cream – iconic

7. Le Tao* – If you can get your hands on Le Tao’s rich, creamy desserts from Hokkaido, do it! Often available at Haneda airport

8. Royce Chocolate* – another Hokkaido superstar, Royce, is one of Japan’s most famous confectionery brands. I also often buy some at Haneda Airport on my way out.

9. Jaga Pokkuru – a third Hokkaido gem on this list. These Calbee crispy snacks are made from Hokkaido-grown potatoes.

10. Shiroi Koibito* – White or milk chocolate cookies also from Hoikkado. So so good

11. Yoku Moku Cigare* – These crunchy rolled butter-rich cookies are shaped like a cigare.

  • Supermarkets: Don Quijote

Bonus tip 1: When purchasing edible goods, check the shelf life as some items are only good for about 3 months. Ask for tax-free shopping if you’re spending over Y5,000 at department stores. This changes in 2026 though. I shared all about tax-free shopping updates.

Bonus tip 2: Based on my experience. the airport does NOT have an extensive array of Kitkat flavours, please purchase your Kitkats in town to avoid disappointment at the last minute.

15. Matcha

IYKYK that Matcha has taken the world by storm and while it is an edible souvenir, it deserves its own category. Matcha is popular for health benefits, aesthetics, and cultural trends (more increased interest in Japanese culture).

Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have only powered this rise in popularity. If you’re considering shopping for matcha, then you should know that the best matcha is made in Japan. Unfortunately, in 2025, there is a matcha shortage globally and in Japan.

Japanese Beauty & Wellness Souvenirs

Forget K Beauty, J Beauty (Japanese Beauty) is IN! I was late to the party but I’m now 100% on board. Japanese Beauty is a major category of some of the best omiyage from Japan. While some Japanese brands like Biore, Kose, and Shiseido are globally known brands, Japan has many more good-quality beauty products that aren’t known outside of Japan. Personally, I’ve never been a skin-care enthusiast, and while I have dry skin, I’m quite fortunate that I’m not prone to breakouts or any major skin concerns. I have used and gifted several of the products below and have only experienced and heard good things.

Here are some of the most loved and most popular beauty souvenirs from Japan

Cleansing oils:

When it comes to cleansing oils, there are two Japanese products that should be on your list of Japanese souvenirs for yourself or for the skin care enthusiast in your world.

16. DHC Cleansing oil – this award-winning cleansing oil is known to remove stubborn stains and dirt well. It is more expensive than the other cleanser options on the list and is considered a J-beauty holy grail product. It is good for dry and sensitive skin.

17. Kose Softymo Speedy Cleansing Oil – This cleansing oil is a very popular japanese product on Tiktok and Instagram. It is a thinner oil compared to DHC and is said to not leave residue and can be used as a single cleansing product. It is also priced much less than DHC. It can be found at Don Quijote and drug stores.

18. Hiphitch Deep Cleansing Oil – this one is newly discovered on my end as it was recommended by my eyelash tech. She recommended it for use when I have my lashes in, as it is kinder on . It can only be found at Don Quijote for some reason and it is moderately priced.

Moisturizing Face Masks

Whether you’re in the market for single use or multi use hydrating face and eye masks, these make excellent Japanese souvenirs. Here are three that I have purchased as gifts and/or used personally.

19. Quality First Derma Laser VC100 – this concentrated Vitamin C mask is a fan favourite

Quality First Derma Laser mask packs, one of the best omiyage from Japan.

20. Lululun Face Masks – great quality for the price. I recently discovered the single use one night rescue moisture masks which I now use on long haul flights!

21. Keana Rice mask – I haven’t tried this personally, but this popular 100% Japanese rice mask  claims to tighten pores and retain moisture,

22. SK-II facial treatment mask and Shiseido concentrate masks – compared to the three masks above, SK-II and Shiseido are more in the luxury range as they are the OGs in Japanese luxury skin-care. These masks are some of the best of the best, but you will pay for it.

Sunscreen

23. Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ – I learned about this sunscreen soon after I arrived in Tokyo and not only have I used it since then, but I have also given it as a gift more than 5 times. It provides great protection, and does not leave a white cast on my skin. Biore also has other great sunscreens, this is just the one I know, use, and love.

24. Anessa Sunscreens – A well-known suncare brand under the Shiseido group of companies. Their sunscreens are known to include a wide range for different skin types. The Perfect UV Skincare Milk NA is a UV milk with SPF50+ and PA++++ that is said to feel smooth and comfortable on the skin.

25. Shiseido sunscreen stick – This clear, lightweight sunscreen stick with SPF 50+ is a popular one. It comes in handy for easy reapplication by the pool or while out enjoying outdoors. It does come at a higher price point compared to the others on this list. This is one product I look forward to trying for myself.

Hydrating Products

26. Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Hyaluronic Lotion – Popular drug store recommendation. I have dry skin, I’m a skin care newbie who appreciates simple skincare routines and this product fit right into my daily routine. It is also very budget friendly!

27. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence – This product has a cult following as well, but I have to admit that it falls in the luxury category from a pricing category.

28. Kanebo Suisai Clear Beauty Powder Wash – I was intrigued by this product when I saw it. It is an enzyme powder that turns into a foamy wash when it encounters water. It is a face wash and an exfoliant in one. I particularly love it when I travel as it is a single use product.

29. Melano CC Vitamin C Essence: A Vitamin C product that is affordable and suitable for most skin types. My sister loves it!

Tips For Buying Japanese Beauty Products

With so many products to buy, and quite a few options for what to buy and where, here’s a summary to help you find what stores or combination of stores work best for you:

Drugstores: Matsumoto Kiyoshi, and Sugi are two of the most popular drug stores for cosmetic products and they often have better pricing compared to Donki. They are everywhere! Personally, I shop at drugstores first before going to Donki. I love that drug stores over a wide range of products at different price points.

Supermarkets: Don Quijote carries a wide array of popular beauty products and beyond. Tourists often go here because it is a great one-stop-shop for many items.

Cosme: Cosme is another popular destination for Japanese beauty products and tourists love it. Cosme’s differentiating factor is that they are known for product rankings and user-generated reviews. Walking through the store, you’ll find products displayed in order of customer rankings. As a skin-care newbie, this was particularly helpful for me as I shopped for gifts for others. I was able to find products that for example ranked highest for anti-aging for my friend’s mom. Cosme offers a more curated and informative shopping experience.

High-End Products: duty-free shops or airport shops for high-end brands can offer tax free pricing. However, they may not always have the full line up of products. You can also stop by SK-II and Shiseido stores for specialized services. For example, at the Shiseido flagship store in Ginza, you can customize lipsticks, what a wonderful way to gift yourself or loved ones with monogrammed lipsticks. I’ve done this at least 10 times and it is always a hit!

Where to purchase Japanese beauty product souvenirs in Japan:

  • Drugstores (specifically Masutko Kiyoshi and Sugi)
  • Supermarkets like Don Quijote (Donki)
  • Cosme in Harajuku
  • Specific high-end stores like SK-II or Shiseido have their own stores.

Disclaimer: we are in Asia after all, so look out for and avoid whitening products!

I love functional souvenirs!

Japan is a popular destination for vintage designer goods, especially handbags. In Japan, there is a high level of respect for craftsmanship and as such, luxury goods are often in great condition. Further, there are strict rules against counterfeit products, and so it is one of the best places to buy original goods so you don’t have to worry about counterfeit goods as you would anywhere else. I bought a pair of jeans from Kojima and I can’t wait to buy at least one more pair before I leave Japan.
