My Travel Story

Hiya (as we say in Scotland)! Welcome to my travel story,  I’m glad you stopped by!

Me in Iceland

I’m Dee. I was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria and moved to the US as a teenager. I studied, lived, and worked in the US for 13 years before I accepted a 2.5 year secondment to the UK. I’m now half way through and my goal is to take advantage of being here to explore Europe.

I’ve always wanted to travel even though I do not enjoy flying. I remember in College sitting with friends and writing an ever-growing list of places I dreamed of visiting. However, I could only afford to travel internationally after I got a full time job and started working in 2009. I started saving up immediately, and embarked on my first backpacking solo trip in the summer 2010. Prior to that, I’d only been to Nigeria, US, Ghana, and Canada. I also made it a goal to try to make it to at least one new state in the US every year. I’ve now been to 27 States. Everyday adventures are just as fun as the international exotic ones, so I try to take in both.

Since that first trip, I’ve been fortunate to embark on several other journeys (local and international) and I have now visited 30 countries.  The funny thing is, my list is still as long (or longer than) than it was those days in college.

I travel while working a full time demanding job (read, more than a 9 to 5) because I make it a priority. If I can do it, so can you! Luckily, I have had the opportunity for travel through work. A few of the US States I have visited were as a result of work-related travel, I also spent two months in India for work  in 2014. Overall, I have been pretty intentional and vocal about wanting to lead a life personally and professionally that allows me to see the world. I put myself out there, did the work to be an ‘eligible’ candidate, and I’ve been blessed to have people in my corner looking out for me. But, when the opportunities came, I was ready and I jumped on it like white on rice!

I’d say my travel style is somewhere in the middle. I’ve done hostels in my earlier days, but you’re now most likely to find me at an Airbnb or hotel.  Since all my travels are funded by me, I’m always looking for good value without compromising on safety and a decent level of comfort. I’m willing to splurge on some experiences like a weekend in the Maldives, or a hot air balloon ride of Cappadocia.
